The music of New Orleans assumes various styles of music which have often borrowed from earlier traditions. New Orleans is especially known for its strong association with JAZZ, and is universally considered to be the birthplace of the genre which was developed at the beginning of the 20th century and was a groundbreaking genre that originated from the African American communities living in New Orleans. The earliest form was Dixieland, which has sometimes been called traditional jazz,. However, the tradition of jazz in New Orleans has taken on various forms that have either branched out from original dixieland or taken entirely different paths altogether. New Orleans has also been a prominent center of funk, home to some of the earliest funk bands such as The Meters. The Fat City Mardi Gras Band was formed in Colorado as a celebration of all of the music that contributes to the musical Gumbo found in New Orleans and the surrounding areas of Louisiana. Dixieland, Funk, Zydeco and everything in between can be found in our repertoire but we also play other genres which we can discuss upon booking.
